empty houses: salameh/hatikva

so maybe i’ll be so desperate
to see south tel aviv shkhunat hatikva
to join the mahapekha

so i’ll rip a hole
in the space
time
continuum
i’ll end up there

& if it’s 1973 i won’t mind
i’ll sing ofra in the street
teach the sisters
about community accountability
maybe

i won’t need to at all they
were so brave
already maybe
i’ll just shut up and learn
adding my voice
when it’s needed
ya akhiot

& if it’s 1941
i’ll speak clumsy arabic ahlan w sahlan
w i’ll call my home
by its true name
salameh

today
there are empty houses in salameh

in 1941 i will be
a stranger from amreeka
like today
there are empty houses in salameh

there are refugees on etzel street who were forced to forget
there are refugees in jabaliya dodging bombs
who want to come home there
are refugees
in miami and when they go to protest people shout at them
“go home”
as if that isn’t what they’re fighting for
there are
refugees
in neve sha’anan
spat upon
by other refugees
who want
to come
home.

there are strangers
in amreeka
who want

there are empty houses in salameh
there are empty houses
