on sitting in shul

2 july 2011

today i sat down in shul
sat down straight away when everyone stood up
to say a prayer
for the state of israel,
& said b”h silently
when no one noticed
my sitting.

stayed so silent didn’t want to speak
didn’t want to be given away
though i had studied hard to say my Rs
not rolling not
by anyone’s standards.

but either way it didn’t matter cause you
amerrrrrrrrrrrrrican woman
were all draggin me around saying,
“this is my daughter’s israeli friend

so sorry slikha
i am secular tel aviv
shkhunat hatikva
so i didn’t know
you’re not supposed
to write in shul on shabbat

so i decided silently
if i come back i will take a stand
i will sit strong stubborn in solidarity
cause i don’t know any place that isn’t stolen,
in sitting i will shout.
