on numbness

7 june 2011 / 5 sivan 2011

you are a conduit,
a wire,
the news flows through
leaving no feeling behind.

you are a coffee filter
in which no grounds remain
any longer.

your arm is tired,
begging to be put down,
from fighting
from writing.

your back is tired
from bearing
witness —
the heaviest burden.

it is easier to pack light,
you tell yourself.
sell most of your things
and carry what you can
on a greyhound.

you play chicken with the trauma of the past.
news paper archives,
astute scholarly analysis:
coming to voice, a respite.

you take down his poster.
you flip it face-down on the table.
you turn it back over,
you put it back up,
and take it down again.

you flirt with danger.
you watch violent war films,
shut them off half way through.
you ignore crosswalks.

you long
to weep
but it doesn’t come.

only a hollow weakness
shaky hands,
shaky legs,
heavy heart
in this weak body.

lying down
or standing up,
you long.
